Statement by Clare Cooper Marcus
I have been involved with this topic
since 1995 when a graduate student - Marni Barnes - and I received a grant from
the Center for Health Design to evaluate the use of four hospital gardens in the
San Francisco area. Stimulated by this work, we continued to look more
informally at dozens of hospital gardens, and were eventually asked to put
together a book on this topic by New York publishers, John Wiley and Sons. The
book—Healing Gardens: Therapeutic Benefits and Design Recommendations—appeared in 1999, and includes chapters by many other people in this field(
Roger Ulrich, Robin Moore, John Zeisel, et al). The current paper was
requested for a conference at Groningen Medical Center, The Netherlands, held in
April 2005. It appears in the book The Architecture of Hospitals, Cor
Wagenaar(Ed.), Rotterdam, The Nertherlands, NAi Publishers, 2006.
